OVERVIEW

In just a few short minutes, Jacob's life changes forever. Drawn Out is a hard-hitting drama that explores how young people on an inner-city estate get drawn into trouble with life-changing consequences.  The film was born from the real-life experiences of 15 young people from an estate in north London.  It is a very raw film at times but it is intended to reach those who are in harsh situations, to make them think, reflect and be aware of the consequences of their actions.

50% of the cast including one of the leads had never acted before, never been on screen and never been involved in anything like this before.

PROCESS

Over 10 months, workshops were held in the heart of the estate. Working alongside a small professional crew; the concept, script and themes were led entirely by the young team, who were involved both behind the scenes and on set.

Quotes

“Where we come from, projects like this don’t happen, this is actually on the estate where the young people are...We need to go deeper, find out the real problems young people are facing today...The transition I’ve seen from the very beginning to now, their aspirations are high, their mindsets are changing, they want to achieve more in life, they’re seeing there’s more to life than their area and what it is, these types of projects allow our young people to express themselves in ways they’ve never really done before.”

— Shawdon Smith, Ambitious Academy

“When people watch this (film) I hope they see it doesn't matter what you come from and what you do you can still get out. Negative things don't have to hold you back.”

Johnny, 18, pilot project participant

Drawn Out is a very important film to us all, it’s more than just a film, it’s hope, a way out and a message to those caught up or stuck in negative situations they don’t want to be in.”
